Sunflowers are blooming this week. I'd go within the next 5-7 days to check it out before they start to wilt from the heat. I agree that the field in not as big / impressive as last year, but it is still a nice view. The sunflowers follow the sun throughout the day so where they are facing will depend on when you go out there and the position of the sun at that time.

I rode by today on the trail and more impressive than the sunflowers were the throngs of people. The picture doesn't really do it justice. The trail was not really rideable between the flowers the parking lot at Mial Plantation due to all the pedestrian traffic. The parking lot was full and cars were lining both sides of Mial Plantation. There had to be 100 cars parked along the road. I opted for the road until getting past the parking.

Was this on the news or something? In years past there were a few people there, but nothing like the mass pilgrimage today.

Yeah I think it was on WRAL Friday and the N&O this past week.

We went yesterday. Fortunately, I can't compare it to years past as it was my first time seeking it out, and I thought it was spectacular. Obviously the direction the flower faces are pointing is driven by nature, not the people who planted the seeds and so it was easy to not care about that.

Frankly, my wife and I found it to be spectacular and well worth the drive (and longer than anticipated walk in searing heat).

I prefer last year's location to this year's for photographic reasons. The huge electric tower in the mix this year along with all the power lines doesn't lend well to images, oh well!
Same. I follow a lot of locals on Instagram and the tower is being featured in the photos. I find it an ugly part of the landscape but not much can be done there.

They probably rotate the locations as well so maybe the second round in Fall will be in a different spot.

I also find it funny that so many people hop the fence to get different photos. I wonder if they know what they're walking in.

when I discovered the sunflower fields 2 years ago, there was almost nobody out there. Guess the secret is out

It sounded like people were being major Aholes and not respecting the fields. This is why we can't have nice things.

I avoid the crowds and hit the ones beside the road. This is in Sanford
and I took it about 10:00 one night last August using a full moon as light
and a 30 second exposure. Not a soul was around, it was nice!
