Thanks again for the feedback about Erie. So far, they have been the least expensive with greater coverage than Amica and the Farm Bureau. When I asked Farm Bureau about the CTR letter, the agent told me that they don't send it if you have all of your insurance through them. We are going to keep getting quotes before we make the move to another insurance company.
We have auto and home with erie. All the neighbors around me are getting new roofs from hail damage. Erie came out and denied me. They said the roof is fine. I am the only one with erie. The company that did the roof next door said erie almost never pays for hail damage to a roof. Luckily I've never had to call on them for auto insurance, so no review for that.
We've been Erie customers for 15+ years, home and auto. We currently have 4 cars (teen/young adults) and just this year, had two separate incidents where a branch fell on a car (2 different cars in 2 different locations). We've had a couple other incidents over the years where people have hit our cars in parking lots. We've always been satisfied with the ease and speed of claims processing. Every 5 years or so, I research pricing to be sure they are still competitive, and they always are.
I feel compelled to update my earlier response on this thread. After a minor (about $700) fender bender since I last posted, Erie dumped us. Over the 17 years we had their auto insurance, insuring anywhere from 2 to 4 cars, we probably spent over $30k on premiums and they probably paid out around $6k in claims. All were minor, most were not our fault (e.g., branches that fell on our cars, parking lot incidents). They say our claim rate is above average.
Just an update regarding our teen driver and insurance. We went with Erie last December (2017). After our first anniversary and thankfully no accidents, our rate went from $384/month to $314/month. That translates to a decrease of $840 a year! Our agent did tell us to expect a rate decrease if our teen driver stays accident free but didn't expect such a huge drop. Hopefully I haven't jinxed myself by posting. Our home policy, also with Erie, went up about $70. The umbrella policy stayed the same.
We switched from State Farm to Erie for 2 cars, home, and umbrella insurance. Our rate for cars was a bit lower...we now get car and umbrella coverage for the same rate we were paying for car alone. Home insurance dropped by $1.8k/yr.
We went with Erie for a while, mainly for the dental plan that they offered. Recently we discovered a dentist that accepts Medicaid so we no longer have a plan with Erie. They were great for the time we had them, they are known to be quick and efficient, easy to deal with. I never had to file a claim, but have had others tell me that they typically are very responsive and cooperative.

Not saying Erie isn't great, but in NC your rates are based on driving experience, so your rate for teenager will drop every year for the first 3 years he's on your policy. Three years experience is the magic number in NC.
Congrats on the no accidents, my teens are coming up on a year and I'm hoping to get a similar drop for driving experience and no accidents (knocking on all the wood I can find here).
I was trying to find a more recent thread on car insurance and found this one.
I currently have Erie, but they do not operate in a state where I will need coverage, which surprised me.
Won't go back to Geico, and have been happy with Erie for car and home insurance, though I thankfully haven't had to use it.
If Erie is some people's #1, what would your #2 be that is available in every state, or at least most states (plus NC)?
