Is bicycling around Chapel Hill pretty friendly in terms of their being lanes for bicyclists as well as the terrain not being too hilly for your average not-so-in-shape bicyclist who likes biking to a local coffee shop mornings? I guess I could motorize a bicycle is needed but I am hoping this would be doable, to bike a mile or two or less to a local coffee shop? I am pondering moving to Chapel Hill v Asheville and I did visit Asheville a couple of years ago and it seemed very hilly and also unfriendly (no bike lanes) for bicycling.

Emphatically not universally true but it could be true but it depends 100% where you live

Chapel hill has green way systems yes there is topography no it's not the mountains

Living around downtown Carrboro would be closest to your desire

okay thank you for the insight. I am thinking since Chapel Hill is a university town, it must be pretty bike friendly given all the students bicycling around.

Chapel Hill is a "Bronze" city for bicycling according to the League of American Bicyclists (next door Carrboro gets Silver)

Lots of bicyclists in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. They're always trying to do something to improve things for cyclists, but you would have plenty of company biking to your local coffee shop. Terrain does depend on the specific house/apt you're talking about. There are some hills here.

This might help:

Chapel hill is on a relatively level plateau and pretty bike friendly. Best to stay off narrow roads outside of town. Recent laws in NC have all but eliminated moped an motor scooter usage.

Both (Chapel Hill and Asheville) are extremely bike-friendly towns by East Coast Standards.

There's Hill in the town name for a reason.

Chapel hill is hillier than much of the rest of the triangle, but you are talking about a mile or 2. That's nothing, and is all dependent on which coffee shop you choose, and where you live, then plan the route.

A hill is a hill until you climb it, then it is a mountain.
