Yes it will be a mess, but now there's no alternative. NCDOT could have reworked the bridge when they widened I-40 to 6 lanes and then widened it again to 8 lanes just a few years later.
This project will be let next month. The interchange will be a DDI. Majority completion is scheduled for August 15, 2023 and total completion is February 11, 2014. Should be a fun ride.
If you've already looked at the hundreds of pages of documents linked here, can you point to a specific place where I can see simple diagram of the interchange as it will look after completion.
You know it's an important project when time travel is involved.
