I had a different impression of that - while no fan of Sims as I find him like that weird uncle in anyone's family, he seemed to me to be genuinely shocked, frustrated and deeply affected by what was happening.

Didn't he say he lives in or grew up in F'ville?

As soon as I heard "JC Penny" my first thought was "oh no, not Penny - they are already going though so much, with first the closures and then bankruptcy".

Yeah i think he lives there. I get that he was scared but then he's not the right reporter for the job. He was nowhere near anyone and looked like he was about ready to race Usain Bolt and win.

Yup that's how I felt as well. In that tense situation, he wasn't the greatest choice as he was totally freaked out by it all, and his emotion over it as a little dismissive of the underlying issue, which led to some complaints around social media and a gentle rebuke from the anchor back at the studio (not a rebuke so much as a reminder of the slave auctions...).

Definitely do not love that WRAL sent out a tweet this morning that included Durham in the rioting and looting.
Did you notice abc11 placed all of their black and brown reporters (with the exception of Condon who was in Durham where things remained cool), in harm’s way when things got ugly ?

Then this morning a contingent all white abc11 reporters were out to report on “the cleanup” and “making things right” again ?

I prefer abc11, but the optics looked HORRIBLE for them doing that .

Mims is from South Carolina but he was WRAL’s Fayetteville beat reporter for several years before Gilbert Baez. I don’t know where Baez was last night but I agree Mims was not in his element.

Joe Fisher - who was covering Durham last night - was covering the Reopen N.C. protests initially and is getting good at telling the story of protests.

Anyone know if WTVD’s downtown Raleigh studio was ransacked? I did not get to see any of their coverage last night.

Not sure, but what I saw for 10 p.m. news last night, they weren't downtown but at Sutton Station (for those who know the area better can tell me I'm wrong and that Sutton Station is downtown). The WTVD guy covering Fayetteville kept calling it JC Pennys. I'm about as far from a grammar snob as you can get, but it was bothering me.

I've made comments about Brian Mims before, and maybe way earlier on this thread. He's better at telling a story about the history of an area than breaking news. Maybe it was his scheduled weekend to work.
