On a side note, having been in Raleigh for a little over 10 years (moved from a small town in upstate NY) I would say that north Raleigh is the best area to live. It's convenient to downtown Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill (20 minutes or less) as well as the airport for trips back home. It's a little pricier of an area, but it is booming right now. Good luck with your decision. Glad to see another "yankee" like myself invading the south. HA!

We don't have anything like Branchdale, Minersville, or Yuengling, though...

Schuykill County, i.e., Tower City, for one blissful year, to Lebanon County, to Cary.

I see. How do you like the area in contrast to Tower City?

My son just moved back from Harrisburg to take an NC state IT position in North Raleigh. Much better than the commute to RTP but less pay.

If I were in my 20's again, newly married, no kids, I'd live in Durham. I like the urban feel of the downtown and there are some very, very pretty areas if you want a more suburban feel.

When I was first married, we moved to San Francisco and rented a house in Corte Madera, (Marin Cty) California. Yes, outrageously expensive (rent was more than the 2 mortgages combined on the 2 homes we owned and were renting out in Portland). But we wanted some space since we had a few dogs and we didnt want to be right downtown (I'd done that about 8 years previous and loved it but was looking for less urban).

So...urban: Durham. Less urban---more residential suburban areas, still in Durham. Maybe N. Raleigh? Chapel Hill/Carrboro too but it will cost more.

I'm glad you are thinking about rentals starting at $550-800. That's the low end for most apartments in Chapel Hill, but you should be able to find something in that range in a fairly decent area. Cost of living will be a definite kick up from what you are used to in PA. What's gas running up there by the way? Here it's about $3.25/gallon.
