I think enough of the general public is wired to drive on interstates that you'd catch enough tolls, but the part about the federal law makes sense.

If NC just put tolls up for fun, I could see VA or SC retaliating by putting their own up and then everybody loses.

update on 540 completion (the southern wake county expressway: from its current end in Holly Springs across Wake County to where it will intersect Interstate 40) not the phase 2 part from 40 to Knightdale...
from TBJ today:

"As of April, Phase 1 of the project is 95 percent complete, with contractors working to finish paving and installing the electronic tolling equipment over the next few months. If all goes well, it could open to traffic in July."
https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle...n-traffic.html

Regarding Phase 2, "If all goes as NCDOT expects, the full loop could open to traffic in 2028."

if I'm off ten ten rd. right where they will open 540, how much time do you think it will shave for me to jump on 540 to I-40 and East to Wilmington? I think it might be a good ten minutes saved.

Depends on time but if in the morning commute probably 15-20 minutes to be honest. That light to turn left from Cleveland Road to get onto 42 to get onto I-40 is a real pain in the morning.

Avoiding 42 completely will be worth it.

Haven’t seen an official announcement yet but Holly Springs Rd between Kildaire and Sunset will be closed 5/17 thru 5/20 for construction. As of today the traffic poles and lights are up but pavement on the other side is still in progress. This diverging diamond interchange is gonna be a bigger mess than the Western Blvd one.

Has anyone seen any numbers on what the toll cost will be to go from the current end in Apex to the new end near 40/70?
There’s nothing on the Quickpass site yet.

You should contact NCDOT and get them to retime the light.

Don't believe it's been officially announced yet, but they've said the per-mile rate will be more or less the same as the current portion and they're of similar length, so it should be on the order of $4 with a transponder.

I live in West Cary, maybe two miles from a 540 entrance, and 100% will pay to take 540 to 40 to go to the beach....just driving across town to get on 40 takes 10-15 minutes, plus the whole ride along the Southern edge of Raleigh....no thanks, will gladly pay a toll.

I was talking about this with someone who lived a long time in New York. He said northerners are used to having to pay a toll and will definitely take the new route.

I'll pass on paying. I'm retired now, so I can usually pick the times to run errands, etc. I try to do everything between 9A-3P.
