I don't buy milk really so I'm not sure about that. I do love the seafood selection at HT. I used to enjoy the Lowes Food seafood near Carmax on Glenwood but they recently remodeled and made the seafood section much smaller and it is mixed in with meat now. I eat both meat and seafood but I prefer to shop at a store that has a full service seafood department because I believe it gets more scrutiny and oversight. Lowes Food in Brier Creek has much more specialty departments which I find odd because the Lowes at Carmax is a good location as well.

What might help is to know the sale patterns for these stores, if they are not the same. There are some guidelines to be found on the internet, such as the best day to shop is Wednesday or Thursday, but there might be some variation per store on top of that.

For example HT occasionally has 18 eggs for the price of 12 on certain days, but I can't recall the days or pattern to this as we usually get our eggs and milk from FL.

Thought about this thread when at a FL a couple days ago, not one of the ones we usually go to.

This one was just up the road a mile or so from one of those, and the prices were noticeably higher - 49c for bananas when it's usually 39c, and a half-gallon of milk was 60-70c more expensive - that is significant.

I noticed a few weeks ago that the FL at Six Forks and Millbrook was selling gallons of milk at the Lidl price, $1.88., but the one on Sawmill and Lead Mine was way more expensive - I guess it's far enough away from the Lidl that they don’t have to price match? Interesting.

The best Food Lion is a closed Food Lion...
So you end up a decent grocery store somewhere else that doesn't have crappy produce and carries a decent selection of everything else, 2 of Food Lion's glaring problems system-wide.

We like FL. We regularly go there by choice, and we are central to supermarkets in this post //www.city-data.com/forum/53093246-post27.html

To each their own.

Honestly, I would say I’m indifferent when it comes to Food Lion; I preferred Kroger when they were here.

In my experience, the Food Lion that I frequent is a little higher on some of their items than Kroger, and the quality of the store brands/deli isn’t as good. The location closest to me never seems to be that crowded, either. Many of them also lack self-checkout which is actually my preferred method of checking out.

That said, they’re not completely terrible. The prices are still somewhat reasonable and the stores are fairly clean. There’s also a couple of store brand items that aren’t that bad. Certainly an impovement over some of their ‘90s stores which stunk.

My opinion as well.

I moved here in the mid-nineties, and this line really hits home. I think my reference Food Lion reference stores improved their businesses noticeably when Harris Teeter moved nearby. Which is really helpful, as, comparatively, the Harris Teeter product pricing is quite a bit higher.

I would say that they started improving around the early/mid ‘00s with the first wave of remodels; Some of the stores were cleaned up to an extent. Winn-Dixie OTOH started going backwards. Some of their older stores reeked worse than FL but the Marketplaces were still okay.
