Downtown Raleigh's newest food hall, Transfer Co., will be holding a soft opening event tonight to showcase some of its vendors, including Che Empanadas and Locals Seafood Market and Oyster Bar.
If you ask 10 people you will get 10 differing opinions on tipping. As if it is something that we should actually have to ask about. I've come to accept that in this country, where tipping is a conundrum at best, there are no rules.
If you ask this person, the answer is a flat out No. But don't go by my personal choice, I also don't agree with the 20%-by-default paradigm that has somehow devolved over the years, and I never tip for take-out which to me is about the same as a food hall.
I prefer the European, Brit and Aussie approach to tipping over the American one, and follow that here when I can.

Certainly your prerogative, but you do understand the difference in how restaurant (and other service) employees are compensated in the European, Brit and Aussie systems versus ours, don't you?
I go out of my way to press "other option" and then "no tip". Getting way out of control. Servers who make the serving wage are tipped, not people who make over min wage. Yeah, I guess that makes me a grinch.

in reverse order, yes, of course I do, doesn't change anything, and, damn right it is

Like you, I'd rather pay more and eliminate or greatly lower tipping. Unfortunately, i don't see that happening, as restaurant owners are getting a free ride on the backs of their customers in regard to paying their employees. The system is absurd, but personally I'm not going to penalize the employees , since they didn't create the problem.
When you go to a place like Jersey Mikes where the credit card machine asks you if you want to tip, who gets those tips and how are they divvied up?
I tip the jar at Jersey Mikes's...not on the card. I always tip with cash in restaurants too although I pay the bill with a card.
