I have a tall order. I may be offerd a civilian position at Ft. Bragg and I'm interested in finding a place to live that is commutable to both Ft. Bragg and Raleigh. I'm interested in Golf, Lot's of Trees, Good Schools, and a viable Youth Hockey Club.

Any advice?

Don't know about the hockey club. But check Lillington/Angier area for even commute. We lived in Lillington. I worked in downtown Fayetteville and drove 40 minutes. My husband worked in Cary and drove 35 minutes.

Sanford is another popular option.

Sanford is a popular halfway point. Also you may want to look into Willow Spring and Fuquay-Varina. Lots of great neighborhoods in Fuquay with plenty of trees, especially on the southern side heading down 401 towards Fort Bragg.

Willow Spring has the Hidden Valley Golf Club (18 holes, course rating 71, slope rating 121).

Fuquay Varina - Bentwoods Golf & Country Club (18 holes, course rating 72, slope rating 132).

You may want to consider being closer to Raleigh than right in the middle, because you'll have more "weekend" and shopping options - which is probably why Fuquay-Varina, Willow Spring, and Holly Springs are popular with other people splitting commutes.

Sanford is an ideal location, and a number of civilian and military live here and commute to Ft. Bragg. It's roughly 30-40 mins. to get on Post from here. It is also a quick drive up US1 to Cary/Raleigh. It takes me 30 mins to Crossroads in Cary, and 45 to North Hills Mall, so not much more than someone in Apex or Fuquay who has to fight the traffic there.
The Ice House is just down the road from Crossroads and they have youth hockey. There is a rink on Post as well, but haven't been there in a long time, so not sure if it's still open. I remember that it was a very nice rink and they did have youth hockey, because they had information and standings posted.

Sanford is also a very nice small-medium size town in its own right. Our school system is stable and a new middle school is set to open this fall. Lots of neighborhoods in a variety of price ranges. We have our own symphony and professional regional theatre as well.

The real sell for a golfer though is that Sanford has several good golf courses, the best being Tobacco Road. It is ranked the 10th most difficult course in the U.S. by Golf Digest. If you conquer the Road and want more, it's a quick 30 min drive south to the golf mecca of Pinehurst.

I too am looking for a nice location to split the commute between Raleigh and Ft. Bragg. My fiance is to be stationed in Ft. Bragg in August. I'm an attorney seeking employment and thus, for job opportunities would like to be somewhere near Raleigh. We're both in our late twenties, no children and generally enjoy active social lives. We're looking for either an apartment/townhome condo. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We're visiting the area next month to look around.

I second, or is that "third" or "fourth".... looking into Sanford.

Sanford is growing, and offers a lot of potential. Although Sanford can't offer the hockey piece of the puzzle, you'll be within almost exactly even striking distance of Raleigh and Fayetteville. And Raleigh definitely has ice facilities.
