It's not working for *those* women (pretty small subset of the population), who clearly had other influences. Societal stereotypes are perpetuated by it, affecting the choices of many women and men and altering perceptions of women doctors and men nurses. (And 90% of nurses are still female.)
I don't think anyone can argue that girls are less supported to pursue any field than boys these days. Research shows its the boys that are falling behind and not going to college as much across the board.
Interestingly, more egalitarian (gender-equal) societies have more life satisfaction yet are more self-segregated by field. It's not that gender equality discourages girls from pursuing certain fields but that it allows them not to if they’re not interested: The More Gender Equality, the Fewer Women in STEM
The majority of Med School students are female, so it's obviously not working.
When my mother was in the hospital in November, she kept calling the doctor nurse. I sheepishly apologized, and she said "Don't worry about it ... I'm called 'nurse' many, many times every single day, despite the white coat." So yeah, the stereotype is still going strong.
Socializing children from early childhood to believe that doctors are male and nurses are female is sexist. It creates mindsets, perpetuates stereotypes, and limits opportunity for women and men. But hey.
So that means we cannot enjoy a little innocent picture without this "junk" circling around in our heads, 24/7? Watch out or I'll send the Spanish inquisition over to your house to see which way you hang your toilet paper.

Oh good grief...it was a picture on the internet! It was cute! Stop blowing a picture out of proportion like this. Im all for equality but people really have to stop getting so "butt hurt".

You see my reaction to the photo as this "junk circling around in our heads," and I see the limiting stereotypes as the junk circling around in our heads. Just different views of what the junk is.

If you'll notice, I didn't bring it up. I shared my thoughts while eating a bag of chips. I didn't experience any butt pains whatsoever. Did you?

I have a daughter and you can be sure that she doesn't think doctors are only men. As a matter of fact, she's never even had a male doctor at any visit since she was born. A picture of a little girl that wants to be a nurse isn't going to be a "limiting stereotype."
Right now she wants to be a city planner, but I guess she's normalizing "limiting stereotypes" by not wanting to be a mayor or governor instead?
