Yes - just the food court was busy. The mall itself looked completely empty and I remember being surprised they still allowed people beyond the food court area.
I still think it is a good looking building for its suburban mall form, and have followed its fall from grace with a bit of sad abandon. I would break out to the food court there for a team lunch from RTP if we needed a really casual “out-out.” I thought the Chinatown idea was a great concept, and am disappointed that it wasn’t ever pulled through. I am very excited about the re-invigorization of this prime location as office space, with hopefully a renewed activation of space, including the food court/hall. I can see co-working spaces doing VERY well there. Excellent land use, perhaps put up an apartment tower or two?
Gee, downtown Cary really, really needs the Class-A office space to keep the local food businesses alive, and this step may help to curtail such growth, perhaps.
I remember going there a time or two and hated those stairs shown in the photo of the place. The person who came up with the horrible idea of the stairs should be run out of the business. Shopping bags in hand and now have to go over a bridge (I think there was a bridge at the food court entrance) or up stairs to get back to the car. Couldn't they push around more dirt to make a flat surface? Also gave the feel of no close parking. Over at the mall, don't you feel great if you get a spot close to the entrance?
Original part of the mall was built in 1981, very early in the build-up of that area. The food court was expanded in 1991. The first of the commercial buildings in the vicinity was the original Perimeter Park on the east side of Airport Blvd, now called EastRidge. Those buildings began opening in 1983.
I think part of what's been holding this site back it's that a terrible site for mixed use due to the airport noise, which is rather extreme. I live in the flight path six miles out from the airport, and find the intermittent noise from air traffic to be a total non-issue. I also work right there in Aerial Center and can see that even something like outdoor dining wouldn't really work here because the jets flying a few hundred feet directly overhead can be ear splitting.
