New to the area, in the process of purchasing a house. Looking for homeowners insurance . Can anyone recommend a reliable and trustworthy agent or company ? Thank you.
Happy Amica customer here...we switched home and auto to them a half dozen years ago after State Farm wanted to jack up our rates, and we’ve since added an umbrella policy. No big rate increases since we joined up.
I moved to Amica last year, saving almost $300/yr. Now my renewal in June is an increase of $200/yr. I called to question and was just told it’s due to building costs going up. I feel like I got a teaser rate to leave State Farm after 30yrs. I am not going to switch again this year. Will see what happens with renewal 2021. My autos are cheaper at Amica. Be aware that even tho Amica has a rebate program, NC is not included.
just make sure you're getting like coverage, and what IS covered. You can also save money sometimes by looking at your appraisal and getting the cost-new of the building covered, and not the value of your land.
Example:
Purchase Price: $400,000
Appr Land Value: 120,000
Appr Cost new of House: 350,000 (which is then depreciated to 280,000 as an example)
So, you can get 350K coverage instead of 400K coverage and save some $$. Now, you need to check with your lender about this too.
In January, I went through a review of all our policies (auto, homeowner's, personal property and umbrella).
I've often remarked that the only good thing I got out of my first brief marriage was access to USAA and a nice cat. I've loved USAA since 1975 - and finally said goodbye in January 2020.
With certain things, quality is more important than price. Insurance is one of them, and that's why I stayed with USAA all those years.
In January I got comparative quotes from three highly rated companies (Amica, Erie and NC Farm Bureau). All were cheaper than USAA, but Only one was appreciably cheaper: Erie. While their car insurance was quite a bit more expensive, the other policies were WAY less expensive. Annual savings was about $600. I'm comfortable with Erie's ratings/reviews. If I wasn't, I wouldn't have switched no matter how much less we were paying.
Do a Search on this group - there are lots of posts on this topic. The companies usually recommended are Erie, USAA and Amica. Amica is a co-op - they tend to only want people who won't make claims.

Huh?
Roof damage from hail, complete new high-quality roof paid for and all I paid was my deductible.
Nicks in automobile windshield from stones, etc. They paid it 100% since it affected the ability to clearly see through them.
Been with Amica 28 years.
