I usually take I-85 to I-95 to 17/15 through Harrisburg to I-81N to Madrid/Potsdam NY.

Wondering how I-81 all the way down to 29 and then 86 through Danvville would be. Has anyone tried both routes and can comment? Drove up here last weekend and the traffic in I-81 was the lightest I've ever seen so I'm considering the route above. My normal route is fine but gets slow going on 15 through Leesburgh and points south.

That is the route I always take, to and from PA.
Whether going to Central PA, NEPA, or NW PA.
US 17 and 15? I gave up on it years ago.

I-81 can be a grind at times, but it is still superior. And the mileage isn't all that different.
Danville to US29 to VA 6 over the mountain on US250 to I-64 to I-81 at Staunton.

PA is a big state. I can’t imagine going from Philadelphia through Staunton to get to Cary/raleigh.

We'll be starting from 60 miles north of where 81 ends, so Philadelphia is not in the picture.

Thanks for the in input Mike. We're going to give it a try. Winchester VA is 500mi south of our starting point so we'll stop there for the night and pick up the rest of the route in the am.

Winchester has plenty of places to stay.
Easy on and off of I-81.
We sometimes leave later in the day from Cary and use it as a stop over.

We have done that route - and yes to Philadelphia! - several times. We usually do it for Thanksgiving weekend to avoid the standstill traffic on I-95. For where you are going, it makes even more sense. We do exactly what Mike does. And it is a BEAUTIFUL ride! It's worth getting out and taking a photo at the overlook near the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance. And we also spend the night in Winchester. Good luck!

It IS beautiful! US 29, Rockfish Gap, Afton VA, Shenandoah Valley, Pennsylvania ridges and valleys up to Harrisburg, etc.

All lovely.

My drives have been from SW PA and I went past Front Royal, VA and eventually onto I95 to I85. IIRC drive time was approximately 8 hrs.
