The OP specified cool season in their post

Wow, I did not think I would get any responses so did not check back! Thank you all for your kind and diverse replies.

Our neighborhood landscapers sprayed a pre emergent last week for fall weeds, but they just forgot my little courtyard. I went to Home Depot and got Scott’s weed preventer (not weed and feed). The directions say it can be used in spring & fall. I figure if I’ve messed-up it can’t be much worse than it is now. :-)

I’ll hold off on reseeding with a fescue blend until September or early October.

Very good advice but would always skip applying a fall or spring weed and seed fertilizer. If you’re trying to fertilize simply put down a lawn fertilizer application. If you have weeds you’re trying to tackle best thing to do is use ortho weed B gone spray either hose attachment if they’re excessively widespread or individual hand spray bottle if your spot treating. Liquid is always far more effective than granular when it comes to killing weeds.

You need a good 2-3 months between preemergent and reseeding, or as Wheelsup mentioned, the seed won’t grow. Summer through late fall, I usually only spot treat for weeds (if I can’t just pull them by hand). In November, around Thanksgiving, I’ll put down a Fall weed and feed fertilizer.
