Postal workers will make it easier to support your local food bank next weekend by collecting donations as they make their appointed rounds.
Letter carriers will collect nonperishable food from mailboxes Saturday, May 10, as part of the U.S. Postal Service's annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. All food collected in the region will go to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which makes it available to local organizations.
Representatives of the food bank, the postal service and the letter carriers associations announced the food drive Wednesday. They said the items needed most include canned meats and vegetables, canned soup, peanut butter, rice, pasta, dried beans and cereal. They ask that people not donate items in glass jars or bottles.
To donate directly to the food bank, you may call 875-0707 or point your browser to www.foodbankcenc.org.
That's a great reminder, MAtoNC ... and a good suggestion, Mike. Maybe our meet-up later this month could also be a food drive.
I did a little volunteer work at a food bank back in my old home state. You would not believe how quickly they go through peanut butter & jelly. It flies off the shelf because it's so popular with kids & has a long shelf life.
I'm going to put my canned goods out for the mail carrier on May 10th. If we brought food donations to the meetup who would deliver it to the food bank? I think it's a great idea! I'm sorry I can't volunteer for that. With three kids I've got my hands full and I don't dare juggle canned goods beyond my mailbox!
I just went to Aldi this week and they had beans for 45 cents a can. A great affordable source of protein!
