I'll toss this out there from Charlotte - in my area, you would need to spend $950 a month to live in a reasonably updated single bedroom apartment, in a complex that has a mix of middle-class neighbors in it.
Durham? I'll suppose about $25 less. Figure $925 a month at least.
I'm discovering most incomes three times the rent.. which is difficult. I'm looking for about the 800 dollar range. Anyone know any they would recommend?

That’s going to be very difficult to find in Durham. One place I’d look is the Oaks at Northgate. That is one of the lower priced complexes I researched when I was moving here earlier in the year. I can at least vouch for the area since I live nearby.
