Hello,

I am thinking of moving to the Raleigh or Durham area. Pre-covid how was the job marketing (in particular marketing jobs) in comparison to other major cities? I want to be in the best position to land a job, and will only relocate to Raleigh or Durham if the job market is decent.

Also, are there any common natural disasters other than the obvious that I should be aware of?

Thanks,

(I also posted a similar post in the Charlotte forum because I am looking at Charlotte as well, but please delete if not allowed.)

Can you be more specific about what type of job, industry, etc you have experience in and/or are looking for?

In general, both the Triangle and Charlotte have very robust, healthy job markets.

I was in mortgage lending but recently switched careers to marketing. I just received my bachelor's degree in Marketing and am currently getting my MBA. I would be looking for marketing-related jobs.

Job market is pretty strong but it's very specialized. There are lots of IT, pharma, medical/clinical positions. Do not forget that there are 3 universities right here, and you'll be competing with the brightest of this area. You'll have to do your own research in your area of specialization. I do not think many people would know much about entry jobs in marketing or what you are looking for specifically.

Common natural disaster is hurricane. There are tornadoes, but I nothing like in the Midwest/Plains.

Ever since Raleigh had basically a direct hit by Hurricane Fran, despite us being this far inland, this area has been spooked by hurricanes. That was 25 years ago, and nothing close to it since in the Triangle. It was a huge hassle with lots of property damage and people without power. More common in hurricane season is flooding in low areas. Do due diligence when buying or renting.

Tornadoes, ice storms, snow storms, and bad thunderstorms are I guess the other things to pay attention to. It’s common in summer to get bad storms late in the day, with conditions favorable for tornadoes. Your individual chance of ever being affected is small, but something you want to me mindful of and not screw around with. Most snows melt in a few hours, but once in a while we get a big event. If it involves ice, it can get especially nasty with power outages and trees down on homes, cars, etc.

I’ve lived in Wake Co for 25 years and the worst I’ve personally dealt with was a tree snapping a year ago last week when a front came thru a create some freak wind shear thing. The event lasted on like a minutes or two. Heavy, heavy wind, hail, downpour. Ripped the power line from the house and left a hole. No power for 4-5 days and maybe $1500 in repairs. I know folks during Fran that lost cars and had trees in their dining rooms.

you were working full-time while getting a degree? Where is undergrad degree from, and where is MBA being taken?

based on the Indeed link provided, there are good jobs available across the spectrum of experience.

Even in Marketing, I imagine there are "specializations" (real estate marketing, consumer marketing, events marketing, etc).

It's ALWAYS a good idea to line up a job before moving somewhere--especially during a pandemic.

Yes I was working full-time. My undergrad is from a local state university and my MBA is from Bentley.
