Thanks for the link. Something like that would be fine as the upgrades look mostly cosmetic. Storage would be important, as having three kids means a bunch of crap.
Looking at the photos, that deck is large enough? It's a wooded backyard, so not sure about the playing catch. But for you - is 60 ft wide and 30 ft deep grassy area sufficient? Pretty flat?
Also, on that house I would assume the updates include systems. It's 21 years old, and was sold to an absentee investor 5 years ago. A H2O has likely been replaced, perhaps an HVAC, doubtful the roof.
oh also - when you say "walk to shops", do you mean walk to a strip mall with grocery, Starbucks, restaurant? Or walk to a small villagy downtown/space with local shops, coffee shop, small restaurants, etc?
Cause we have LOTS of the former, and few of the latter.
Walkability was important to us too....but like Bo said, you may have to adjust your expectation of what you're walking to. That said, the "strip malls" here are nothing like they are up north. They tend to be a much more pleasant all around look, feel and often are laid out like faux villages rather than just a straight line of stores.
Hey OP, the only thing that might be limited in your search is walkability, at least relatively. Otherwise, a sweet spot that often gets overlooked in lieu of newer housing is east Cary/west Raleigh. There are some nice houses on nice lots with mature trees (along with good schools). My parents built in east Cary in the 80s and still live near Cary High and Crossroads. Take a look at everything from the Maynard loop eastward towards NC State (towards Lake Johnson, Athens Drive, etc.). There are walkable areas near NC State, but homes might be beyond the higher end of your budget. Keep in mind (as prior posters have said) that you're jumping into a crazy, competitive seller's market. Maybe even rent for a year or two to see if you really like the area? Something like this is close to parks and other recreation. Not too bad to walk to Fresh Market and a couple other stores/restaurants. It is the top of the budget though.
