Not knowing your economics (frankly/bluntly), it could make a difference. There's a lot of "Raleigh boys" who return after college, and they're in the top 10% of income by mid-30's. But that just means there's particular spots or days at spots that you'd feel like the ugly duckling, so to speak.
Raleigh is NOT insular like some other places I lived when I was in your situation. Buffy & Chip aren't already planning their lifetime together because their families have known each other for generations.
As someone said, Durham would be even less so, though have some elements of all the above. Durham's just smaller than Raleigh and has fewer people that "go back home", and a more recent population growth & popularity.
All that said, sure, give Glenwood South a try on the weekends to see what nightlife is like. Look for meetup groups. Between North Hills (and free concerts, assuming they restart this summer) and downtown Raleigh, anywhere that fits your budget would work. There's plenty of gyms, hangouts, greenway trails, and retail. North Hills and downtown are about 8 minutes by car away from each other.
