Do the batteries and tests, and IF one fails, make your plans.

Smoke detectors pass tests for much longer than their service life expectancy. Their "failure" is generally failure to detect fire, not a failure to sound the alarm when you push the button.

That inefficiency is why they tend to have a 10 year service life recommendation.
Another big reason is that they tend to get dirty and start having false alarms as they age. That encourages people to pull the batteries or remove them, so the NFPA started recommended the 10 year replacement, though they will last much longer.

What we will probably do is make a list of any defects and schedule replacement sometime. I don't work at home but I can if I need to let in a service person.

I haven’t heard of a hardwired detector without a harness - I would hire an electrician to install harnesses so you don’t need to worry about it in the future. I really don’t think it’s a good use of money to have an electrician on standby on the weekend.

Oh I gotcha - sorry I misunderstood. Yeah I would think it should be relatively easy for an electrician to just add harnesses, that way going forward you can replace them yourself and not have to worry about junctions or splices or whatever they're called.

Michael & Son is open 24x7, but weekend rates probably won't be cheap.

And no, you cannot just unplug ours.
Yes, I installed them in my Yuma home, where they had to be wired with 12ga wire, a real pain....but as mentioned before... do the battery test/change, then proceed as required

Again, as mentioned before, perhaps you are overly concerned (which is certainly your prerogative) about safety the battery backup in the detector gives you....after all, the batteries in a hardwired smoke detector are in place to account for commercial power failures . The average US home is without power for less than 5 hours annually...which equates to a reliability of 99.94%.

I have seen good reviews about this company. Didn't realize they were 24x7. Thanks.
