Some people have steep driveways or steep hills to get in or out of their neighborhood. In that case, if your job requires you to be present on snowy/icy days (like a hospital), AWD might be worth it. Otherwise, I don't think it matters in the Triangle.

From what I've seen, most o the problem comes from people that consider "anything that doesn't show cord" as acceptable tires. Every time I've helped a stuck car get out of a parking lot or whatever its been a car that has tires worn down to racing slicks.
My 2 cents echoes others. I don't think this is a "must have feature" of a vehicle here.
I drove 48 miles home in a snow storm in MA with 6 inches of of pre-plowed snow on I-95 (that ended up dropping 18 inches) in a 2014 Nissan Altima and other than minding the normal adjustments people make when driving in snow, had no issues.
The snow here is much closer to a "I have to have AWD once a decade" rather than "I'll need it 6-10 times a year".
As for Ice, there isn't a passenger vehicle available I would drive in it. Cue the Richard Dreyfus scene from JAWS when he tries to tell the local yocal Swamp Yankees they are overloading their boat for my opinion on anyone who claims they can drive on ice.
If it snows in Raleigh, don't drive. This is what happens...
