For a very special occasion coming up in December, which restaurant would be the best choice: Herons in the Umstead Hotel or the Fearrington House Restaurant?

Fearrington House

Also would consider Second Empire in downtown Raleigh

Agree on Fearrington House. I recommend booking a room so you an walk to dinner, enjoy it, and then walk back to your room. You'll also get breakfast (nice) and a formal tea (I prefer the less formal one they used to do, but it is still nice).

I've never been to Fearrington House, although I heard it was good.

Can't go wrong with Heron's or Second Empire. We only had Heron's once and it was the chef's food/wine pairing, it was great. But we have been to Second Empire a few times and it is outstanding.

I know Heron's did a menu switch during the earlier days of the pandemic - not sure if the regular menu ever came back

Ahh gotcha. I was there pre-pandemic and it was a special menu. It was good for what it was but if memory serves you had a series of courses (7 maybe?) but they were all preplanned.

The food was outstanding, however if you like to pick your own meals Second Empire is the place to go. I have never been let down there!

Herons over Fearrington
I’m also a huge fan of Second Empire but not sure that was your question.
