A Hilton hotel that's about a year in the making in Smithfield is taking a major step forward as Johnston County continues to grow and attract commercial investments.
Smithfield Extended Stay Investors, an LLC tied to Chapel Hill-based Wintergreen Hospitality, purchased a roughly 2.3-acre lot off E. Market Street at Towne Centre Place next to Interstate 95 for $1.3 million in late September, according to Johnston County deed records. That land is where Wintergreen Hospitality plans to build a 5-story Home2 Suites by Hilton.
Edward Holmes Jr. and father-son duo Buddy and Carter Keller — the developers behind the 500-acre Reeves Farm community planned in Pittsboro — have submitted a rezoning request with the Town of Smithfield for a 164-acre concept called "Local 70."
Initial plans call for a maximum of 830 housing units, including apartments, townhomes and single-family homes, as well as commercial, retail, industrial and office space.
