Last year was pretty bleak for 9th graders trying to be promoted to 10th grade. For Wake County, 16.1% of 9th graders (more than 2,200) failed to be promoted to 10th grade; for Chatham County, it was 25.5% (208 of 816). These numbers are about double the pre-pandemic retention numbers, with the lack of in-person instruction due to Covid-19 blamed for the results. Here is hoping there is a dramatic improvement this year!

1 in 6 NC 9th graders didn't make it to 10th grade this fall

I would have never thought it possible to fail 9th grade.

My daughter was in 9th grade last year, and while she did well grade-wise, I can't say I'm surprised by these numbers. It was a rough time to start high school.

Not gonna get better soon. Consider the fact that the last full year of in-person school this year's freshman had was 6th grade. Think about that.

Agree, I have a freshman and a sophomore and I think my freshman’s class had it much worse. At least my oldest got 3/4 of an important year of maturation in 8th grade prior to HS. I’ve seen the effects of missing that and we have every opportunity to support in a stable home that values education, I can’t even imagine kids coming from homes that are struggling.

What's also worrisome is I have heard little if any discussion on this issue by the Wake County school board - not sure about the other school systems in the Triangle. "Summer classes" or whatever it was, didn't really cut it. Heard they were pretty much useless.

I remember hearing that one of the top NCAE people said that learning loss during Covid "was a construct". Well here is the proof that it wasn't.

Even my senior talks about how immature most of the kids are. She also knows a lot of seniors that are failing classes that are required to graduate.
