Hi we are going to be moving to the area in June. I am trying to get a handle on what youth sports there are in the area for a 7th grade girl, going into 8th grade girl for basketball? She has been playing since K and has been on her grade top travel team since 4th grade (first year they allow travel) and plays AAU as well in the spring. Does anyone have any insight on if kids play school sports in middle school or if it’s travel through clubs? Also since we will be getting there in June - too late for AAU- any basketball camps? That way she could start to meet people right away. Thank you!

They play both school and AAU ball here. Also, many will play winter rec. ball through area towns to keep tuned up.

I would probably sign her up for the college basketball camps if they have them this year.

There are tons of AAU teams in this area.

Its possible some of the school teams will go to specific college camps for the June team sessions. If you know the middle school she will be attending you might want to reach out to the coach or AD there.

For her age, Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh has a girls basketball day camp for rising 5th to 9th grade late June. Many but not all campers will go to a catholic school and hope to play at Gibbons but not all the campers are from a feeder school. The girls head coach played in the Big Ten, assistant coach in the ACC so its a well run camp and the people who will be there probably know a lot about what else is going on that time of year. I think a bunch of the private schools in the area also have similar summer programs.

I don't think the middle schools do much pre-season training but there are a number of skill development programs that take place at various locations starting early fall. And some of the aau programs will play a fall tournament schedule and will have tryouts late summer. Then travel basketball shuts down mid fall for school ball and rec leagues.
