In elementary school they don't allow single subject acceleration. So if you don't place high enough in English & math the school will not provide. Most parents instead pay out of pocket. Much less push back in other districts. The process to get into LEAP changes frequently. Parents have commented it's more about getting a certain "mix" of students rather than giving opportunity to those that would normally meet criteria to received gifted services in other districts.

When my kids were in CHCCS at Carrboro elementary school they did allow single subject acceleration. My daughter was gifted in English but not in math. Certainly could have changed in the years since she’s been there though. I didn’t know many people who paid out of pocket unless they needed extra help. Never knew anyone who paid for extra gifted tutoring but I imagine there were some families who did. Just not any families I knew. LEAP is not the regular gifted program. It’s for profoundly gifted kids. Regular gifted kids stay at their base school.

LEAP is changing. We recently got an email about it. It used to be based solely on test scores. Now admission will be more "holistic" to make it more equitable to under-represented minority groups. It remains to be seen how it will fare.

Gifted education in the elementary schools was not anything to write home about. A little bit of pull-out and maybe some extra worksheets. Battle of the Books was very good, though. And there are a lot of very smart kids in the regular classroom, so a smart child should be fine. Many kids don't leave for LEAP until after elementary school since it starts at 4th grade, and they want to finish out 4th and 5th at their own elem.

Compacted math in middle can be decent for a very smart kid (if they don't go to LEAP). It remains to be seen if that will change. I feel like they did away with advanced English because my son got into LEAP and chose not to go but was never in any kind of advanced English in middle school. Perhaps other middle schools are different?
