Yesterday we learned that although our rising 5th grader was admitted to Durham Academy, our rising 9th grader was waitlisted. Since our older child was the one who really wanted to go there, she was very disappointed. I was wondering if any other families had this experience, and if so, how it turned out. I am trying to get a sense of the probabilities of the situation in order to be of most help to her. Any response, whether here or privately, would be so appreciated.
I know a few families including us but a number of years ago and we never ended up getting a place for the other child. Hope your experience is different !
Thanks so much! I'm not feeling very hopeful about it. I'm sure everything will work out in the end, but it's a little frustrating. I wish they didn't put families in this position.
Glad you got in. My recommendation is never due what my in-laws did to my wife. They got out of Navy, moved to Durham, had to send their children to DA (because that's what people like them did), however there was only a spot for her in the grade she had just finished. So they held her back (8th grade) so they could tell everyone both their children were at DA. She was miserable. Older and more mature than everyone else was a real struggle. Also, at the time, everyone had known each other from birth. Finally by junior year she had worn her parents out and they let her transfer to Jordan.
Her brother finished at DA and I don't think it did anything for him. Graduated 66 out of ~70 in his class. Heavy marijuana use while in high school, bounced around a few colleges and finally graduated (sobriety helped). Had difficulty staying at jobs for the first 10 years post college, now he has finally settled down.
