I haven't seen any press release but this is verified on the museum website. It was mentioned over on Reddit. Apparently the museum received a $1 million gift and decided to use it to give everyone free admission. They still have paid parking.

We are grateful to receive this commitment, which reflects Jennifer and Jason’s love of art and Duke. The New family’s generosity will ensure that anyone can come to Duke to experience the Nasher’s collection, allowing us to share our greatest cultural assets with our neighbors in Durham and around the world.

I did several years ago.

If you won't believe me, maybe you'll believe the museum?

Raleigh's Contemporary Art Museum had an admission fee at first, but it was abolished. Difficult for such a small museum with no permanent collection to get people to pay, unless the temporary exhibitions are killer. Ackland in CH is free, too.
