Bad news: If you don’t have an appointment they determine if you can get your license by how long you can sit in the DMV without breaking. When I got mine four years ago I waited for 8 hours.
Also, don't make a late afternoon appointment (say after 2:00 or 3:00), or they may just cancel the appointment due to running late.

In 2000 I had to take the written test and wait in line a couple hours for my turn despite having a license from elsewhere. Dang you more recent arrivals are lucky!

I don't remember having to wait at all in the Fuquay office in 2009.

2012 - we both had to take written tests. (And don't get me started on the hassle of having to prove my FULL middle name, which had been abbreviated to one initial for over fifty years. )

2016 had to take the road sign test, but no written. Not sure if waived now but some are saying it is.

Be sure to have all your docs- residency, old ID etc. I saw so many people get turned away at initial check in for forgetting stuff.

Pro tip: get there 30 minutes before they open.

Thankfully, they have improved their appointment process tremendously since the pandemic started. I will never go in ad-hoc to a drivers license office without an appointment after suffering hours of wait in early 2020 (before Covid).

That is exactly what I took when I moved here from Virginia 20+ years ago.

Had to take road sign and eye test as I recall, but they always have option to do road test if they want. Study those road signs, NC has lots of different ones, more than I’ve seen anywhere.
