Hi all

I would like to know if I need to take a "written" test to get my NC driver license.

I am moving from Michigan and having a valid unexpired license.

I have scheduled an appointment for the driver license.

I could not find that information from the NCDMV site.

Thank you.

According to this site, "Written and road tests may be waived for individuals with a valid license from another state."

Moved here five years ago (from MA, a non reciprocity state) and didn't have to take any test; just a new picture.

I do think it depends on your age. You have to have what other states may call a "full" license. If you're a teenager and have what may be called a junior license or something similar you "may" have to re-test, hence the verbiage.

Having to take a written test on moving here was one of the dumbest things that's ever been required of me in adulthood.

I had to take a road signs test when I moved here in 2016. I was in my mid-30s.

NCDMV dropped the road sign test for renewals awhile back, so you may not even have to take that.

Good news: No.

Bad news: If you don’t have an appointment they determine if you can get your license by how long you can sit in the DMV without breaking. When I got mine four years ago I waited for 8 hours.
