If you no longer can read or focus, go to an opthalmologist to check for cataracts. You also should consider whether colors are not as bright any more.
The biggest thing I noticed after cataract surgery was how much brighter the colors were. My vision was vastly improved, and I could almost see well enough to go without glasses for distance vision.
I'm like goldenage with respect to cataract surgery. Bright, sharp colors and my vision is now 20-20. Had to wear glasses since I was a teenager but not now except of a pair of cheap reading glasses for close work. And the procedure is a piece of cake.
If you go for cataract surgery, think carefully if the doctors try to upsell you on lenses that will give you both near and distance vision. I got this for one eye, and it never worked -- yes, colors were brighter but I did not have good focus either near or far, and glasses couldn't get it better than about 20/80. I went to another ophthalmologist and he figured out after a good deal of testing that my corneal surface was so uneven my brain couldn't figure out how to use the fancy lens. He did resurfacing of the cornea (a very irritating recovery) and it was very worth it. I have 20/25 in that eye now.

The type of lenses is a very individual decision. I got multifocal lenses, and had special surgery to correct my astigmatism. It cost more than Medicare would pay for, but I am very happy with the result. I have decent distance vision and need glasses for reading and driving. My doctor is in Wilmington, so I won't recommend the firm.
Congenital cataracts, that finally got to the point insurance would pick up the tab.
Immediate 20/20, with cheap readers like Corgi Dad.
The world got brighter and sharper overnight and surgery was a breeze.
My ophthalmologist says that improved color vision strikes many patients even more than general sharper vision.
