After years of study, the report offers the following three phases to consider for constructing commuter rail:
  1. Eastern portion Implementing service from the Auburn Station in Garner to Raleigh Union Station.
  2. Central portion Implementing service from Raleigh Union Station to the Ellis Road Station.
  3. Western portion Implementing service from the RTP Station to the West Durham Station.

Of these, the western portion is considered last in priority currently due to challenges associated with construction including higher cost and a longer implementation time frame.

The comment period for deciding what portion of the rail system should be built first is open now through February 19, including open houses in Raleigh, Durham and Morrisville. For more information and to review the full report, visit https://www.readyforrailnc.com/feasibility/

I say forget this nonsense... These geniuses can't even keep the regional bus routes up and running, they need to learn to walk first before they start jumping off cliffs thinking we're ready to fly here.. They just suspended the 2 major direct bus routes (DRX & CRX) connecting Durham and Chapel Hill to Raleigh last month, for cryin out loud..

People aren't giving up their cars for this pipe dream, nor do we have time to keep ignoring the current issues affecting the local & regional transit system.

You wanna ride a train, take the Amtrak - - It already exists, and it's only $7 from Durham to Raleigh and takes less than 30 minutes. Remember? Remember the millions and millions of dollars they spent building the new Raleigh Union Station??? !!!

Even a truncated system won't be affordable without another tax increase.

No tracks running to the airport. They would likely institute a connector over to the airport from the Morrisville station.

So if you wanted to go to the airport you'd be driving to the rail station, taking the rail to Morrisville, then taking a bus to the airport?

I dunno this whole thing just seems like a colossal waste of money to me.

One more time for those in the back...commuter rail is intended for commuters, not airport patrons.

Ok, but realistically what commuters are going to use it? Nobody wants to be on a train with hundreds of other people unless they have no other option, or the commute time is significantly shorter. This is why it’s feasible in high traffic cities, but we’re not even close to that. It’s also a lot more feasible when you have one city that’s the job hub, instead of 4.
