Those sound like unusual situations and not the norm. I went to the UNC Urgent Care in Morrisville and they referred me to a UNC specialist in Chapel Hill, which was not a pleasant drive in my particular situation.
Yeah. I'm a very pro-active health consumer. I've been known to not even use the referred provider, and go to another provider. (That's exactly how we ended up at Wake Ortho.)
Hi, OP here. I am looking for a primary care doctor who will manage my health care and give me the option of choosing a facility or doctor. Duke seems to work like a large, expensive HMO and is very unhappy if you choose to get something done out of their system. Even ultrasounds, mammograms, x-rays, etc. Getting them to provide an order for the test for a non-Duke facility is not easy and most Duke facilities which provide these types of services seem to charge a $300 facility fee even if it is in a doctor's office. They also tend to tell you that you need the services of a specialist and someone will call you in a few days to schedule something (within the Duke system of course.) These appointments are almost always months out, at least 2 -3 and I've had a couple which were one year. Yesterday I received an e-mail that one of my one year out appointments had been pushed 6 weeks further out because the doctor would be out of the office that week. After all long string of annoying, inconvenient and in one case life-threatening/altering encounters with them - along with several billing issues - I have reached my limit with them but need to find medical care. Duke seems close to a monopoly in Durham and I have not had much luck finding doctors on the internet or through my insurance who are not associated with them. I was hoping someone knew of one or two of these unicorn doctors in Durham but at this point I have decided I would rather drive 20 miles than continue to see them. So, I hope that helps with what I am asking/looking for. Thanks again.
Mlwk1 - Could you afford to see a concierge doctor? You pay a monthly fee, but can see them almost immediately.
Doc Matt Direct and Priority Medicine are a couple of names. Perhaps someone here has experience with this type of primary care.
