Agree that kids that age are not too picky. When we moved here the kids were 9 and 6 and they were happy to get out and walk around the college campuses (and enjoyed walking around the pond at Duke Gardens), going to a playground, I think we went to Monkey Joe's (Defy Gravity would be the best alternative now I guess). Etc. Pullen Park was a definite fave.
If they are more laid-back like my family of little people, they might enjoy smaller parks more than Pullen. I lived in Raleigh for 25 years before moving to Wake Forest and have only been to Pullen Park twice. I actually avoid Downtown Raleigh and prefer places like Annie Wilkerson Nature Preserve, Durant Nature Park, Forest Ridge Park and Joyner Park. Just wanted to offer some free choices that the children would enjoy.
If they are willing to travel 1.5h out for a day trip, Sylvan Heights Bird Park is our favorite day trip and offers lots of up-close learning opportunities.
Roller skating/ice skating. Riding bikes on tobacco trail or Umstead
