Anyone know of any weekend getaways within 3-4 hours from Raleigh? Something kids will enjoy too.
Not too crowded. Water falls, caves, gem mining etc.

The Boone/Grandfather Mtn/Blowing Rock/Linville area has caves, water falls & gem mining. Great time to go too, the weather is great in the summer.

Second that suggestion. My kid had a blast at the "gem mine" we went to up near Grandfather Mtn and is still looking through his gems a month later. The Glen Burney trail has waterfalls and leaves right from downtown Blowing Rock. Lots of kid friendly hikes and such. Great getaway.

How old are your kids. Mine loved Tweetsie Railroad just south of Boone until they were about 9 or 10. Then we ruined them by going to Disney World.

West Virginia is an awesome place to visit and a very easy day trip, I do it often.
However it might pay to wait a couple of weeks due to the recent flooding. Having
said that hiking the Endless Wall Trail and/or the Rend trail in the New River Gorge area
is wonderful. Concho Overlook is beautiful! A visit to Thurmond, WV is worth the time as
well. If you like trains a visit to the Pokey route is a great way to spend the day. The
possibilities are endless in that beautiful state!

Hanging rock is waterfalls and hiking. Camping and no Disney stores. Sounds by your name you want to be on top of a mountain. This is the place.

Claytor Lake State Park
Dublin, VA

Has camping and cabins, and, a serviceable Sleep Inn(I think) at the entrance to the State Park access road.
It is gorgeous, and about 3.5--4 hours from Cary.

We spent a three day weekend there a couple of years ago and loved it.

Thank you @ Dire Wolf! My 8 year old is a "gem" and rock collector. If we find a bagful of "gems", we, the parents will have some peace
