I don't get the problem. They upsell during a service visit, you say "no.". Pretty freaking simple.
Because it's companies we trusted who didn't do that before - there's a reason who don't choose slime ball HVAC companies to check out a problem. Who wants pressure at the end of a tune-up service? It's not like they stop at the first "no" - they keep ranting about the benefits of whatever upsell they are doing.
Anyway, the OP was supposed to make people aware of the issue, whether or not people think it's a "problem."
A lot of HVAC companies, especially the medium sized ones locally, have been bought by private equity firms. Obviously the pressure is then put on to get a greater return on the investment. I hit some random trade forums and social media from time to time and I often see HVAC techs complaining about the sales pressure they are under when they arrive on site.

I like working with Mom and Pops.
Of course, they can retire or be bought out, too.

I'm still in mourning that the HVAC company you used to recommend (and I used them a decade ago, as well) is (essentially) kaput. He never returned my calls when I needed to get an evaporative coil replaced in my A/C unit this past summer, which fortunately was still under warranty, but I still had to pay for labor $$$$ as well as freon replacement $$$).

Yeah. That makes me sad, too.
One of the risks you take with Mom and Pop.
