Okay, it's time to ask: why the moniker "Flat Stanley"?
It's a school project where kids take pictures with a paper/cardboard cutout of Stanley. Flat Stanley is a series of kids books. Wikipedia has a good article on the Flat Stanley project.

Like JONOV stated, Flat Stanley is an educational project that schools have been doing for many years.
The children usually decorate their Flat Stanley and do a little write up about him and then send him to someone that doesn't live in the same area as they do so that Flat Stanley can experience new things. Then Flat Stanley gets sent back with pictures and write ups of his adventures so that the student can share that with the rest of the students.
So, this has nothing to do with Lester Flatt and Ralph Stanley?? Huh, well I think I'd still take him around to get pics with the NC Musician Murals, some of which are very close by.
