You may be able to dump it on a market like https://******************/search/?s=f350

Thats a serious work truck and trucks be hella expensive these days. Somebody somewhere has a wrecked body or transmission of one of those waiting for a new host. FWIW, when considering your next vehicle, research issues with the direct injection engines that everyone is using today and having to decarbonize them every 60k. Toyota is the only one I can think of that uses both port and d/i that basically eliminates the carbon buildup because it washes the valves via port injection.

carproblemzoo.com is a great place for research.

Good luck!

Also if anyone has any good mid size SUV recommendations I would love to know what brands/models that are pretty reliable. I had planned to get a Ford Explorer since it's rated high on the crash test performance however after this blown engine thing with Ford I really don't want to give them any more of my money (and we have been Ford people for decades).
How do you know the engine is bad? And with a $20,000 quote, I'm assuming your truck has the 6.7 Powerstroke diesel engine?

That's the central question, isn't it?
The 5.7 liter engine in my 90 GMC K1500 could be rebuilt locally by an engine rebuilding specialist for $3,000.

For me the question works like this:
As is, the truck is worth X. With a rebuilt engine it is worth Y.
Could be, the truck is worth investing in a new engine. Or maybe not.

First, I don't want to put any money into this truck. In fact, I have been on my husband for us to sell or trade it in for a couple now years since we no longer have the need for a truck like this. We can't park on city streets with it (been given a ticket), can't park in most parking decks and when we go to the stores/restaurants it takes up two parking spots since it's a long bed. Now we have lost all the equity that was in it (approx $20-$29K)

Does anyone know if any dealerships take a truck with a blown engine? Everything else is in great shape for it's age. In fact, we had just had it in for it's scheduled maintenance about 1-2 months ago so this came as a huge surprise!

If not a dealership where might be the best place to get rid of it? Are people/mechanics ever looking for a truck like this that have access to engines and would just then turn it around and sell? If so, not sure what I would even ask for my truck. Same goes for parts dealers....wondering what I should expect around here.

I saw that the Mazda and Hyundai SUV's were also rated highly (crash tests) so those are some I am going to look at. I'm not into the luxury vehicles anymore and don't even want a lot of extras on it (had sunroofs before and always a problem, actually like cloth seats, and don't want tons of electronic gadgets that will probably have issues down the line). However it seems like so many come with all these extras now and what is up with all the cars having black interiors???? I am done with black! It gets way too hot. And I don't have time to order one since I am paying for a car rental right now (that's another story....horrible experience with Enterprise).

Thanks!
I will just throw this out there, (and full disclosure, I did not read the full post), but you might consider listing it "as is" on some of the local sites like Craigslist or FB Market. You may be surpised at what someone will pay for that truck.

Example, it's been many years, but I had a 1995 Tacoma with $200k miles on it. It blew the head gasket and to replace that was a super cheap part (well under $100) with a lot of labor, but also the possibility that the heads were warped and I might need a new motor. For me, I didn't mind doing the gasket, but I did not want to sink several thousand in labor just to find out that it needed a full new motor.

It was in good shape, this was 20 years ago, and I listed it with a very honest desciption of what was up. I think I listed it for $2500 and people beat my doors down for it. They guy I sold it to wanted to know if it had good enough tires on it to be able to be towed home (he came all the way from Tennessee to get it).

Ha, the thing had brand new michelins, a new paint job, and never had any problems before this. I sold it to him at the quoted price, but knew right then and there I could have gotten double for it.

MY POINT: An F-350 is a desireable truck. For a mechanic who has the means to replace an engine themselves, it might be a very cheap fix if they can find a used engine and have all the equipment. You may find someone to take it off your hands for several thousand dollars, they'll know exactly what they are getting.

They'll make a pile of money (based on their hard labor to fix it) and you'll get more than you would if you pay $20k. You'll avoid the risk of being stuck with the $20k, and you'll put in a lot less time dealing with it.

My advice is to CONSIDER posting it, put in the title "blown motor" to weed out the tire-kickers, and see if you can get whatever amount makes you feel good. At least worth a try, and I bet you'll be surprised at what someone will pay.

EDIT: I see others said the same thing. A lot more effeciently than I did, with less words, but same outcome....

I only ask out of curiosity, because that seems like a huge estimate for a gas engine.
I 'assumed' it was. (Which makes my comments all the more true. A good diesel mechanic can probably deal with it, and those are HIGHLY desireable motors.)

By "new engine" Do you mean a genuine new engine from the stealership or a "New to you" (AKA) used engine. a used engine from a salvage yard would save quite a bit of money.

Dealership = stealership so expect low offers like $2000. Parts peddlers will likely offer even less. My buddy has worked at a dealership his whole adult life and you can't believe some of the vehicles he has gotten. Lincoln SUV, new tires/brakes/battery, ice cold AC for $800. Needed a water pump, guy was done with putting money in it and sold it.

You don't mention mileage but I don't think it was going to get 29K in equity for a 12 yr old truck unless it was really a low mileage mint condition truck so don't beat yourself over "lost equity" too bad.

Google around for companies that buy cars with blown engines. There are a few out there that will pay more than junk dealers or car dealers. Also check on getting a used engine. There are also local companies that will find a used engine and install it. I forget who I had found when it happened to me (I found them by googling used engine repair replacement Raleigh), but it was going to be a better bottom line outcome than going with the guys that would buy the car with a blown engine.
