how is the commute from the north eastern side of chapel hill (near the border of orange and durham county), to T W Alexander drive of the RTP?? from a map, it doesn't look too far, and mapquest claims it to be about a 10-15 minute drive. is this accurate??

I'd like to know the answer to this too as we are hoping to move to Chapel Hill and that will be my husband's commute.

As a benchmark, with no traffic it takes us 15 minutes to get from the NC86/MLK blvd/Airport Rd exit on I40 to the airport, which a few minutes past RTP. Probably add 10 min during rush hour? Also, taking 54 E to I40 out of chapel hill can be a nightmare as it can back up pretty bad trying to get onto 54, so we always take backroads to avoid this during the morning and evening rush hours.

Not a bad commute - I think you're looking at 20 minutes. Like toot68 said, you won't encounter much traffic on I40 most days, but getting onto I40 from 54E is a pain. There are some back roads to avoid this, but it seems like everyone is on to them as well (i.e. Farrington to Stagecoach to 751).

My husband travels to RTP everyday from Chapel Hill (we live in the preserve) and it takes him 35 mins and encounters no traffic. He actually doesn't have to go on I-40 so his travels time never varies.

I would avoid I-40! It is terrible. Took him 1 hr to get to cary the other day on I-40!

Just a note, there's a big difference between getting from Chapel Hill to RTP and getting to Cary.
