In many lawns here in Cary, including mine there are patches of a broadleaf grass which sends out runners. Crabgrass killer isn't making a dent. The guy at Lowe's said it might be "wire grass." (It's tough as wire, that's for sure.)

Does that make sense, how do I get rid of it, and once I've gotten rid of it, how do I keep it at bay until I can reseed in the fall?

Or if there is wiregrass in my neighbors yards, it is going to be impossible to keep it out of mine?

Common bermuda aka wire grass is very common in NC. It's only an invasive weed if you have a different type of grass but common bermuda can make a pretty yard as long as you let it do it's thing. It does spread by rhyzomes and stolens so it can be a nuisance to keep out of flower beds. There is a spray you can buy that will only kill bermuda grass and not harm fescue.

Thanks!

So it''s the same as Bermuda? I've seen pictures of very pretty bermuda lawns on this forum.

The bermuda has taken over the bald spots created by the drought; perhaps I should just let it spread in the backyard -- the dog's yard -- where it has a good foothold (and where shade and pine trees make growing a regular lawn challenging), and get rid of the odd clumps in the fescue front lawn.

Where do I buy the spray that kills bermuda and not fescue?

Bermuda does not do well in the shade. It likes full sun.

That would explain the pattern of where it has taken hold.

Wiregrass is thin leaved and needle-y, and prefers the coastal plain/sandhills. I'm not sure why the Lowes guy would say that.

Is Bermuda grass thin leaved and needle-y? And, I don't think Lowe's guys get much training...

Signed, Pines for cloudy skies, too.

Here's a photo of Bermuda grass.

Do the "wires" look like those runners sticking out on the bottom and to the left in the photo?

When I was last at the garden center, I saw that Bayer makes a spray to control Bermuda. I've never used it, but it could be worth a try.

Ah, thanks for posting that photo, Mrs Steel! That's exactly what is plaguing me on the back yard berm. It has gotten under the landscaping plastic so I think I'm going to have to redo the entire berm bed to get rid of it.

Mother Nature gave the region "common bermuda grass" or "wire grass" because it's what naturally grows the best in a sunny yard. I took a common sense approach to the stuff 10 years ago and let it take over my yard. Yes, the down side is that it runs, but the trick is to "cut it off at the pass"
