I noticed it about 3 weeks ago and had to ask my husband if it was new, or had I just never noticed it before. It looks like steam to me, though at first glance I thought it was smoke.
Yes, I too noticed this. Its steam no doubt. But still it just dosent fit in. This is one reason I like Raleigh, and Durham too is the fact that by in large the area is absent the steam stacks and smoke stacks. Unlike those manufacturing/industrial type cities up in the North east and midwest.
Carolina Blue skies are all I want to see, Well x-cept for Shearon Harris, we'll let that one slide.
I just noticed this 2 days ago (I live off of Westgate Road) and it's coming from whatever trucking/distribution company is just North of the Airport (smooched in between 70 and Westgate). The stack has always been there since I've lived here (2 years), but I've never seen smoke billowing out of it before. It looks like clean steam to me.
Ok... I just e-mailed a contact from the NC Division of Air Quality and we'll see if I get a response!
Thanks!
Kind of crazy quoting myself...anyhow...
I actually got a response from this guy at the NC DAQ. He let me know he will look into it next week after he deals with a family medical emergency (hope everything is ok). I was quite suprised I received a response so quickly!
The curiosity was killing me so I swung into the turn lane on my way home from work (I drive right by it). It is located behind the trucking company and doesn't look to be associated. No specific signs for what they are doing and who they are...just development signs. There were really big piles of dirt/sand. Weird. I'll let you all know when I hear back!
WooHoo...I received and answer on the steam stack!
To all of you that were curious about the smoke stack by Lumley and 70...
I e-mailed the NC Department of Air Quality and just heard back:
\\The stack that you inquired about is part of the site remediation (cleanup) activities at the former Ward Transformer Site on Mt. Herman Road. The stack and the associated steam plume are part of the soil removal and remediation activities for the site. Additional information is available at the EPA website for Ward Transformer (http://www.epa.gov/region4/waste/npl/nplnc/wardxfnc.htm ) If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
