This is a state-wide sales tax holiday, but I think it is important to post it here in the triangle forum because not all of us visit the main NC forum, and there are so many new residents to this area who may not be aware of this once a year tax break. During the sales tax holiday period, retail sales of specified articles of merchandise are exempt from both state and local sales and use tax. The sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 1st and runs through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, August 3rd.

It's going to be a fun weekend shopping for delicious new school supplies, but I really want to know where the accompanying back-to-school sales are. I know somebody out there has $10 Levis!

I suppose there is no way to order lap tops online and still be exempt from the tax is there? We are getting our kiddos lap tops but the ones we are buying are online only. It would be super to not pay taxes on them!

Where do you plan to order the computer equipment? Usually when I order online, it is out of state, and I pay Use Tax. The law is called Sales and Use Tax Holiday. If you are ordering online from an in-state provider or an out-of-state provider that charges sales tax, you could call them first to make sure their calculations will be adjusted during the holiday.

See "Sales by Remote Sellers" here (PDF):
