I wonder how they define tourism. I also wonder how they know a hotel room is booked for tourism or if a diner is a local or a visitor. I am sure it's based on some macro-metrics.

Raleigh still doesn't have:

Freeway lighting
HOV lanes
Light Rail
Adequate bus system
Buried wire traffic lights
Full time city government
Large industry
The list goes on. Feel free to add.

This city has a looong way to go before it catches up with the population. Many smaller cities put Raleigh to shame, when it comes to amenities...

when it comes to amenities and TAXES!

I do agree with you however that Raleigh could do better in some things you mentioned.

I love the fact that Raleigh maintains a suburban/city feel, rather than a towering NY city feel. You can have the nice little city part downtown and then a suburban feel all around it. I think it is quite unique and special. I would not change much about it. No sense making it like any other city you can find out there, when you have something much more special here. Regular cities are a dime a dozen.

As long as we have the Research Triangle Park, that will serve as your large industry. All of the other areas that you mentioned are weak.......

Lightbulb My thoughts ...

Freeway lighting
Don't want it. I enjoy not having light pollution and avoiding wasteful use of energy. That's why god put headlights on your car.

HOV lanes
Aren't as effective as people like to believe.

Light Rail
Is coming but at least 10-15 years away.

Adequate bus system
For sure, but even as is it is underutilized and hemorrhaging money.

Buried wire traffic lights
Who cares?

Full time city government
Be careful what you wish for!

Large industry
Who does these days?

Exactly the reason Raleigh is a joke. It's a nice area, but the only reason people move here is because it's cheap and the job market is somewhat decent... If Raleigh were just as expensive as other cities of similar size, this thread wouldn't exist. There's no REAL cohesive effort towards turning Raleigh into a world class city, instead we're left with dirty roads, a failing infrastructure, and about as much environmental awareness as a Hummer running off infant blood... This city was nicer when it was small, but the same methods for running a small city cannot be applied to a city of 400,000!

You lost me at exactly. Raleigh's a joke becasue it doesn't bury the lines to traffic signals? Strange standard to measure a city by.

See! Just as I thought!

You just don't want Raleigh to be "World Class" like all those other cities that people are trying to escape to get here.
