Here is my stats: 33 y/o female. Not married/no children. Work in the tattoo industry (I travel for my job so I can live anywhere). Moderately tattooed; no facial peircings, slender/athletic build (if my body art is covered think: girl next door Barbie). Enjoys: hiking, biking, outdoor photography, reading, art, working out, and an occasional beer at a pub.
Grew up in a small farming town, so driving a reasonable amount of distance does not bother me.
Raleigh - if so - which part
or
Cary (I picked this area due to the low crime and outdoor activities)
Thank you.

From the limited info, I lean slightly to Raleigh, although both will do. Please supply more info. Do you go clubbing, to plays, theater, do you like shopping and dining, what mix of people are you looking for? The more info the better.
My clubbing phase of life is over; shopping isn't really my thing, and I usually save my theater & dining time for my travel destinations as my home time is my down time. Although a great local Japenese resturant is a plus!
Find out for your self. Rent an apartment for a while (6mo) in Raleigh then try Cary. Only you really will know what you like. From the sounds of it seems like your in an ideal position to stay flexible for a while. Try not to commit too much of an investment in staying in a particular place till you find out what you like. Heck you may think the whole place is the pits and want to fly the coup in a month.
I know which area I am leaning towards, just wondering if I am cutting the other short? I don't have the funds nor the patience to move every 6 months (or less!).
OMG, Raleigh. Seriously. Where in Raleigh depends on how much $$ you want to spend and what kind of accomodations you're looking for (i.e. apartment, rental house, buying a house).
Actually, before you named any options, I was thinking either Durham or Chatham County. Both have pretty decent arts communities. Which would be better would depend on which is more important: the pub or the outdoors. In Chatham County, you could probably get a place on some land, kind of out in the country, but no pubs nearby. In Durham, you'd be a little more surrounded, but I would venture that most neighborhoods have a local dive where you could throw back a pint or two.
Also, Chatham County I would imagine has a pretty low crime rate.
