Hi:

My wife and are relocating to NC. We have the luxury of being able to pick wherever we want to live. We just spent a week in Charlotte and really enjoyed it and really took it in.

I have heard and read that the Raleigh/Durham/CH area is the Seattle of the South. Charlotte had some great things, but from what I hear and surmise, Raleigh/Durham/CH is probably a better personal fit for us.

Since we are from Seattle, I think that is great...just don't know if it is accurate. If we can find place similar to the great culture here with more sun then that would be GREAT. Charlotte is VERY different that Seattle.

Can anyone here share their thoughts on that? Any folks from Seattle on this forum that can share their experience transitioning from Seattle?

Thanks much. Happy new year.

Please don't compare any city in NC with Seattle.

I have never hard or read that. My brother lived there for five years and has visited here a couple of times. He did not mention any comparison. Since Seattle is such a huge city I don't see how it can be compared to three medium sized cities.

RDU may be a closer resemblance to Bellevue/East Side than Seattle.

It should not even be a contest. Seattle will come in second to this area, if for no other reason being the weather.

In reponse to the quick reply above regarding a comparison between Seattle and the Triangle, I am wondering why no comparison should be made? Comparisons are helpful in that they provide a relative context for folks like us who are evaluating an area. Clearly they are very different, but if you could explain a bit more than you did, that would be great.

I do have a client that relocated here from Seattle and if you would like to talk to someone from there I would be happy to give them your email. I do know that they love it here.

I would have considered DC the "seattle" of the south if there is such a thing...that is if you consider DC the south. (the census bureau does, and technically it is south of the mason-dixon line but that's another debate)

I've also heard of Boston being the San Francisco of the east (or SF being the Boston of the west), Atlanta being the LA of the east/south, Birmingham being the Pittsburgh of the south and several other things like that. It seems just a little ridiculous to me though. I really think Raleigh is the Raleigh of the south, Atlanta is the Atlanta of the south, Boston is the Boston of the East and Seattle is the Seattle of the West Coast.
