I am thinking of Moving to the Raleigh area and I heard it is really a good place for business and for a Masonry trade. I am from Upstate NY and our winters are a joke for working.
How is the Remodeling and construction service industry doing?
I have my own business for 30 years and build block, brick, stone, concrete and tile. I got the skills but is anyone remodeling or building homes ,concrete patios ,sidewalks, etc. there??If so what is the competition like there?
Our property taxes here are 4.4 % per thousand !
I know some people who came back and hated it and others who went and love it. The people who have come back have told us that they don't like people from the north moving there.? If I can work year round there I would be greatful.

I'm not a southerner, but I've lived all over the country (except the Northeast), and North Carolina is not any different than any other state in the country when it comes to new residents. What locals hate is people moving here and denigrating their new locale for what it doesn't have, and constant chatter about "up in NY we had this, we had that, we did it this way, your way is stupid." Just like if somone from NC moved to NY and complained about the traffic and attitudes of NY. Someone from NY would say "then move the hell back to NC then!" People here are more polite than that - though I'm sure they're thinking along the same lines.

The key to moving to a new area, any new area, is to embrace it. Take in what it has; don't whine about what it doesn't. People that can't or won't do that won't fit in no matter where they moved to, be it NC, CO, ID, or MI. So it's not like people here don't like people from the north, just those specific people you mentioned.

So, move here and embrace the area, be friendly and courteous, and be a good citizen - people will accept you and want you around. You'll love it here.

I have been here 15 years moved from upstate NY and started a business that has been very successfull. We love it here and have been very happy with the move.

But right now is a tough time to start a new construction business here with not much building going on. So you might want to start to prepare for moving but hold off until early 2010 when the recession should be over and things will get back to normal.

I know someone recently who just moved down 3 months ago . Hes a tile installer and has more work than he can handle. Is this a fluke or is there alot of "pockets" of remodeling going on??
