I think we're going with May 8th, and we'll either block out rooms in hotels very soon, or have our guests stay at the Fearrington or places in Cary. Is there some reason the UNC graduation would affect the Fearrington, which is 15 minutes away?

I'm a little surprised that Fearrington has any rooms available for graduation weekend. Most hotels in the Chapel Hill area are probably already booked for that weekend. Graduation will fill all of the hotels for a good 15-20 minutes around Chapel Hill, and maybe more. Keep in mind that there are only two hotels in downtown Chapel Hill, and a few on the outer edges of town, and 7000+ graduates that day. Graduation weekend spills far outside the boundaries of town, and there's a reason that Duke and UNC don't schedule their graduations the same weekend.

Also, Fearrington is a preferred location for both dinner out with the parents and for Mother's Day, so there will be a lot of people down for that.

Surprisingly the Fearrington has zero rooms booked for next year. Perhaps parents don't plan more than a year out.

Hmm, sounds like we need to call around and see if any hotels have blocks available.

Yeah I doubt most parents are planning for Spring '10 graduation just yet. Those student haven't even finish this year. I suspect it will start filling up once the fall semester starts. Unless you are like my mom who waited until my brother got in fall semester grades in to be sure he was kind of an iffy student at times LOL

Personally I would do it in April if I had a lot of out of town guests who needed hotels. It would be a lot less hectic - less traffic, cheaper, restaurants aren't as crowded etc. I would count on graduation weekend being very busy for many of the vendors you deal with.
