Hello everyone! We're moving up to the Clayton area from Gwinnett County GA, and I was just wondering if anyone else was from this area and could give some comparisons. Thanks for your help!
I grew up in Gwinnett (near Five Forks) and still have family there. I live in the Cary/Apex area now and can't say much about Clayton. If you have any particular questions I'll try and answer them.
I'm from Henry County, GA and I am moving to Raleigh, Glenwood South area in 10 days! Don't think I will miss Atlanta very much...born and raised here. I have been traveling to Raleigh for a few years now and I like it there.
I grew up in Gwinnett and have lived in the Raleigh area for the past 8 years. I'd say that Clayton is fairly comparable to the Gwinnett area. Clayton is outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown Raleigh, just like Gwinnett is from Atlanta. It is however, still close enough to enjoy the benefits of being near a major city and having a night out on the town.
It is similar in size to Norcross and has a good "bang for your buck" as far as real estate values are going right now. There has been quite a bit of growth in Clayton in the last few years. A lot of people who work in Raleigh/RTP live in Clayton because of the value. The Cary and Wake Forest areas I'd compare to the Buckhead region as being a little more upscale for Raleigh but not quite as trendy.
As with in GA, you'll have the luxury of being close to both beach and mountains. You'll be about only 2 hours away to the closest beach and around 4 1/2 hours to the Appalachians. The Outer Banks are gorgeous and may become your annual vacation spot.
Thanks for all the feedback guys. We're excited about getting up there and getting our kids in Johnston county schools. We've heard a lot of good things about the school system. We have some friends that moved up there about 2 years ago and they love it. They say it's a lot slower pace than Gwinnett, which is very appealing to me.
I moved from Duluth to Raleigh 15 years ago and really don't see much of a comparison between Gwinnett and Clayton. Gwinnett County has a population of 750,000 which means it is closer in size to Wake County vs Johnston County. So it will be alot less crowded, alot fewer shopping options, and alot fewer billboards. So if you like the slower pace, I think you will like it much, much better than Gwinnett.
That's what we're counting on. We hear people all over the place talking about how Raleigh is great for this and great for that, but I don't think I've ever heard ONE person lamenting the fact that they left Atlanta! lol
I have to admit though my wife and I really liked Atlanta and I had to drag her kicking and screaming to Raleigh. We didn't go back for about 5 years but when we did we realized Atlanta wasn't as great as we remembered - I guess it's all in what you get used to. But you can just about find anything and everything in Atlanta which is not the case in the Triangle. If we only had the Dekalb Farmer's Market or even a Harry's, I would be in heaven!
Yeah, the Harry's is closed, but Whole Foods is awesome! There's one right by my office off of Pleasant Hill Rd. I thought there were tons of farmer's markets in Raleigh?
