Donna - That is just what we were looking at and trying to stay away from. That and in-laws are in FL and had their homeowners drop all Fl policies, that coupled with how expensive the houses look on the Internet and we felt that NC was much cheaper.

Default Tampa Sucks!!!

My husband and I just moved from Tampa last month, and boy are we glad to be here!!! The people that bought our home in Tampa are paying $4100 a year for homeowner's insurance on top of paying almost $4000 a year in property taxes. Yes, there may be no state income tax in Florida, but trust me, they get that money in other ways!
Plus, I can tell you the city of Tampa has a lot of issues. Horrible traffic and just poor infrastructure in general. The city itself has grown so fast that nothing is in place to support the people that live there. I'm not sure if schools are a concern to you, but if you want decent schools, be prepared to invest in private education-The school system is overcrowded and not impressive!
We lived there for 4 years and after about the second year, the 7 to 8 month long summers of 90 degree weather with 80% humidity start to be unbearable!!! No to mention, HURRICANES!!!
Good luck in your decision, but I will tell you that in my opinion, Tampa is NOT a great place to live!!!!

We are back in Florida and planning a move to NC and I have found these forums very helpful. Thanks everyone!

Cnn anyone that has already moved from Tampa recommend a mover that you were happy with? About how much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking?

I've got United Van lines coming on Tuesday to look at what I've got - if I use them I'll let you know, they were recommended to me by two people. I was going to go with ABF U Pack where they drop a trailer or cube at your place and you load it - they are highly recommended - but it would have ended up costing more once I hired people to help me at each end with the loading.

Just to throw my $.02 in:

I am currently selling a 1500 sf home in florida that I paid 157900 for 2 years ago (the summer after Ivan). We are 15 miles from the beach. The insurance on this property is 1200 and the property tax is about 1800. The latest appraisal was 150000 and this is after we added 5-10000 of improvements to the home (wood floors, upgraded lighting fixtures, closet organizer, landscaping, etc). This truly sucks when the buyers were willing to pay 159000 for the house but now the lenders won't give them the money.

Sorry for the tangent. For comparison sake, we are in the process of closing on a 2000 sf home in garner for 215000. The insurance on this property will be $488 and is actually better coverage. The property taxes are actually a little less despite the fact that the house is worth 65K more.
